Description

The relief shows the Sun god, the lord of the planetary deities in Hinduism. Flanking him on either side are his two wives and attendants holding fly whisks. All are seated on a single-wheeled chariot drawn by horses. The relief is sculpted out of ivory and shows good finishing effects. (Mandira Sharma)

Additional Information

The sky deity portrayed here is first mentioned in the Vedic hymns of about 1500 B.C. and was eventually incorporated into the Hindu pantheon.
