Explore the Skies Across Millennia
Welcome to our image database of celestial visions from Eurasia and North Africa (4000 BCE–1700 CE), hosted at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, managed by Department Artifacts, Action, Knowledge. We invite you to immerse yourself in a rich collection of star maps, stellar deities, celestial diagrams, and more, spanning six millennia of astral knowledge and a vast geography. Sourced from museums, libraries, and private collections, our database offers a glimpse of the heavens through objects ranging from instruments to artworks. While some regions and eras shine brighter than others in the archive, our team is actively working to illuminate the gaps. Use the search tool to discover celestial treasures, and don’t forget to share your thoughts with us!
Please also make use of the personalized collection feature.
